Hans is licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Puerto Rico, the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
Hans has over a decade’s worth of combined business and legal experience. As founder and managing member of Riefkohl LLC, he represents business and individual debtors in liquidation and reorganization proceedings under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, as well as in adversary proceedings, including cases seeking a denial of discharge or challenging the dischargeability of a specific debt. Hans also represents debtors and creditors in workouts, out-of-court restructurings, collections, and foreclosures.
Additionally, Hans represents clients in corporate and contractual matters, government procurements, and bid protests.
Prior to founding Riefkohl LLC, Hans was Lead Transactions Counsel for LUMA Energy, LLC. At LUMA, Hans’ main responsibility was to advise the Procurement & Contracts team on Puerto Rico government contracting requirements, as well as assist in reviewing and negotiating vendor agreements, among other types of contracts. Hans also assisted senior management in a wide array of corporate governance matters. Additionally, Hans advised on issues related to the bankruptcies of LUMA’s customers, including business reorganizations under chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.
Before LUMA, Hans was a Bankruptcy & Restructuring Senior Associate at Marini, Pietrantoni & Muñiz, LLC. At MPM, Hans represented secured lenders in chapter 11 proceedings, including in contested matters such as involuntary petitions, cash collateral disputes, objections to plan confirmation, motions to dismiss, among others. Additionally, Hans represented creditors in collection and foreclosure cases, in state and federal court. Moreover, Hans also assisted in the representation of AAFAF and GDB in several cases under PROMESA.
Previously, Hans was a Corporate Associate at DLA Piper (Puerto Rico) LLC, where he primarily represented government entities in the procurement and negotiation of public-private partnerships and similar agreements. At DLA, Hans also assisted financial institutions, insurance companies, and private equity firms in matters such as mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganizations, and taxes.
Hans clerked for Chief Justice Maite D. Oronoz Rodríguez at the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico, and for Judge Gustavo A. Gelpí at the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico.
Prior to law school, Hans worked at Deloitte & Touche LLP’s Philadelphia office, where he assisted in auditing the internal controls of public and private companies and provided outsourced internal audit services.
Hans obtained his J.D. summa cum laude from the University of Puerto Rico School of Law and a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Accounting cum laude from the Villanova University School of Business.
